BINOCULARS If you have spoken with me about binoculars before, you know that I always talk about quality. Just like any hobby or interest you have, you get what you pay for. We carry binoculars that range in price from $16 to $999. What is the difference? Materials, construction, reliability, warranty = quality! Whether music, cars, guns, stained glass or ball-point pens are "your thing", you know there is a difference between average, good or great things. One of the things I bring to this business is many years of experience with binoculars and spotting scopes. I never turn down the chance to take a peak through a new set of glasses in the field and try to make mental notes on each one. I also have a great deal of respect for the web site BetterViewDesired.com. Steve Ingraham is perhaps the most respected independent optics reviewer in the birding world and his knowledge is truly enviable. NIKONAll that being said, the first line of binoculars I pursued to carry when I bought this business was Nikon. Nikon has long been known for their top quality cameras, but they have also always made great binoculars. In the past 5 years, they have, in my opinion, become the leader in optical quality against which all others have to be compared. In June of 2002, Backyard Bird Center became the only Nikon Premier Dealer in Missouri or Kansas. This means that we are the only place in our area that you can see their highly acclaimed Premier lines: The Venturer LX series (8X32, 8X42 and 10X32) The Superior E series (8X32 and 10X42) The E2 series (8X30) The other Nikon lines that I stock include: Action Series (8X40 and 10X50) Naturalist (7X21) Travelite V (9X25) Monarch Series (8X42 and 10X42) Fieldscope III Spotting Scope PENTAX Another company that has really improved their optics over the past few years is Pentax. The anchor item I carry from Pentax is their PF-80ED Spotting Scope. This is clearly one of the great scopes on the market today and cost hundreds less than most of the "big name" companies. Steve Ingraham of BetterViewDesired.com says "The PF-80ED with the zoom eyepiece provides an amazingly bright, amazingly sharp, amazingly detailed view from 20 to 60 power." Steve goes on to say "I have no hesitation in saying the Pentax scope is currently the best birding scope you can buy at any price and, given its price, might even be considered a bargain." No wonder it is their Reference Standard for full-size Spotting Scope! Other products I carry in the Pentax line include: DCF SP Series (8X32 and 8X42) UCF Zoom (8-16X21) BUSHNELL / BAUSCH & LOMB Bushnell Worldwide Optics is a local company and we always carry a few products in their line. They include: Powerview 4X30 (the best children's binocular around) Natureview Birder 8X40 H2O Series (8X42 & 10X42) Legend Series (8X42) Spacemaster Spotting Scope |
